Akan is a lecturer in the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar and honorary Infectious Diseases Consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. He is also a public health professional with diverse experience in research, programme development and implementation. He heads the Clinical Expertise Committee of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment centre in Calabar, Nigeria
